It seems complaints about Facebook have been never ending over the past few years. People can’t stand the targeted advertising, its immoral use of data and it’s lax privacy settings. Enter the new kid on the block, Ello.

Ello has gone from rags to riches in a matter of moments. Launching earlier this week, it has seen up to 35,000 requests per hour join, which means this newbie social network really is turning heads. There may still be some bugs that need ironing out, but its design has a lot of potential.Ello social network

How do you join? At the moment it’s invitation only (friend of a friend from a referral) and those invites are like golden tickets to the Willy Wonka Factory. Selling at $500 a pop, it’s making us think there must be something pretty special on the other side of that login box!

Why is it taking off so quickly? Probably because Ello have placed themselves so very neatly and carefully in the right place in our current social networking market. They play on key traits that a lot of social media users display such as narcissism, a need for exclusivity and a undying curiosity to be part of something, anything.

As for their stance in the current social media environment, they have already been nicknamed the anti-Facebook (which we love by the way), and it’s most likely some cheap shots (by cheap shots, we mean well made points) in the manifesto are aimed at the current social media giant, Facebook.

Some direct quotes about Ello’s feelings on mapping social connections for profit and selling personal data (something Facebook does) include it being ‘both creepy and unethical’. They also state that ‘a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate – but a place to connect, create and celebrate life. You are not a product.’

So at this point I bet you’re asking, what is this network? How can I be a part of the exclusive Ello club? Why am I not already posting Ello selfies and photos of my latest culinary experiment? That’s because you’re not cool enough, DUH! If you haven’t managed to bag yourself a invite yet, then you can visit the site here: www.ello.co.

UPDATE:

After finally gaining access to Ello we have to agree with other sources. It is very lacking, extremely simple and has many design flaws. Yes, it is in BETA stage but at the moment it looks like the wire frame stage of a very basic website.

A  quick poke around led us to believe the best way to describe the reality of Ello is that everyone wants to be on it, but once they are on it, they have no idea what to do with themselves. Most people have 1 follower and don’t have a clue how to find their friends and where to upload things. In fact most people have no idea what to do or what it is for. Ello has also lowered the tone of it’s whole concept by using explicit language throughout, but we’ll leave you to discover that for yourselves if you wish.

As a result of the above we eventually deleted our profile deciding it is better to stick with what you know, even if they do sell your data.
