The newly-released TES app has been announced as a Finalist in the ‘Innovation of the Year’ category at the Digital Magazine Awards 2015.
The TES magazine app, by Page Lizard, will be going head to head for the title against top publications such as Top Gear, WIRED UK and National Theatre Backstage for the ‘Innovation of the Year’ award.
The latest release of TES Global’s popular app is a first for the digital publishing industry, combining both continuous and issue-based publishing in one neat bundle. As well as this, it introduces ‘My TES’, where readers can select their own topics and interests which are then presented in a sleek home feed.
Ann Mroz, TES editor, said: “We’re proud that – on top of giving teachers the best education news – our new app also allows them to personalise what they read by highlighting articles on the subjects they teach and the specific topics that most interest them.”
In the new app, readers have the choice of viewing the weekly education magazine in page-replica or responsive HTML format in the new app, but it now includes personalised streams where readers can select their own topics and interests which are then presented in a sleek home feed.
The app has also had a navigational overhaul, with sleek sidebars, HTML covers and responsive contents pages, as well as upgraded search functionality. Scottish readers are automatically taken to issues of TESS, with news and comment sections dedicated to Scottish topics.
The app meets a complex brief from TES, who wanted busy teachers to be able to log in and see key stories relevant to them at a glance. However, they also wanted to retain the emphasis on their weekly issues in a way that highlights the cover art and features.
As well as this, there is a live feed of breaking news and views from TES’ site, ensuring its readers are always up to date on the latest industry developments.
The app also hosts a comprehensive CPD library, covering subjects from behaviour to financial management and curriculum changes, and all stories can be shared on popular social media channels.
“We are thrilled that the app is a finalist, and can compete with the top digital magazines on the market” said Graham Duffill, Page Lizard’s CEO. “It demonstrates that even a weekly HTML edition can be an industry innovator, despite it taking less than a day for us to convert and style it from print.”
“TES are committed to delivering top quality content to teachers worldwide, and this app brings together the best of advances in digital publishing to cater for its extensive readership.”
